| Lots of Updates |
[Mar. 16th, 2010|02:52 pm] |
A LOT has happened since I last posted here. I took last year off from the 3-day but am back again this year. Hopefully I'll be doing it as a walker but if I don't raise enough then I'll stay on Crew. I have $1,050 left to raise with 14 weeks left to raise it. If I can just get 10 of my friends to donate $100 and one friend to donate $50, I'll reach my goal. This year's walk is on August 13-15th but I need to let my crew coordinator know at least a month & a half before the event if I'm gonna stay on crew or switch to being a walker this year. Last year I participated in my 5th St. Baldrick's event and this year I once again participated for the 6th time this year, this past Saturday in Romeo, MI! For such a small town, Romeo has raised OVER $114,000! They rank in the TOP 25 events off ALL over. They rank right there with events in Chicago, NYC, Vegas, LA,etc and that's a GREAT accomplishment. I rarely post here any more as you can see but I'm on Facebook more than here anymore. I'm also keeping a blog on my 3-Day site.
The website for this year's donation page is www.the3day.org/goto/ksaikin. Even if you can't donate $100 straight out, you can make it over 4 months & that would just be $25/month but if you can't donate that, any amount helps! Please help me raise the rest so I can do the 3-Day as a walker in memory of our friend Paula that passed away in December from metastatic breast cancer. |

| 2010 Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure Walk |
[Nov. 10th, 2009|10:35 am] |
November 2009
Dear Family & Friends,
Yep that's right! I'm doing the 3-Day again! I took 2009 off for various reasons but I am going to do the walk again as a crew member in 2010. The 3-Day has a new name in 2010 and it's called the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. In 2009, the Michigan event had 1800 walkers, 440 crew and raised almost $5 million for breast cancer awareness & research in the hopes that there will be a cure found for breast cancer and there will be no need for the walk.
As a walker, I’m required to raise a minimum of $2,300. I'm aiming to raise a lot more than that! My goal is to raise $3,000 for the fight against Breast Cancer. If I can just get all 391 of my friends on here to just donate $8, I'll reach my fundraising goal of $3,000.
Remember the last time you went to a crowded mall. How many women did you bump into walking from store to store? Two, or three, ten, fifteen, twenty. Remember 1 in 8 of those women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. How many did you see at the mall that you know?
I walk for so many people who are survivors or are still battling breast cancer. As you all know or most of you know, my mom is a 8 year breast cancer survivor this year and is still in remission! I am especially walking for our friend Paula who is battling stage IV metastatic Breast Cancer and lately every time she's had chemo, she's been thrown down and ends up in the hospital because of the side effects of the chemo such as low blood counts needing a transfusion or medication to raise her white blood counts to help reduce the risk of infection. I have no idea how much more she can take of the chemo and the side effects she keeps having, neither do I know if she’ll even make it to see me finish the walk. If she can keep fighting and picking herself up every time she gets thrown down from the side effects from the chemo, then I KNOW I can do all the training and fundraising I need to do so I can do the walk as a walker for her. Hopefully I will be doing it in her honor as a survivor and not in memory of her. As a young woman, I have already had three biopsies because I have found or my doctor has found a lump and wanted to make sure it was benign.I am thankful that they were all benign and am watchful because my mom is a survivor. I am also crewing for all the young women that are under 35 who are diagnosed with breast cancer, especially for Hannah, who is the youngest person I've EVER heard of being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of eleven years old.
Sadly I walk in memory of so many women that have fought their battle so valiantly with this monster we call breast cancer that there's just too many to list in this letter, but I especially walk in memory of all the young women under 35 who fought their battle so valiantly but sadly lost their battle. One person who was diagnosed with breast cancer under 35 is Andi Collins, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 16 years old. Sadly she lost her battle with breast cancer before she could even finish high school or even go to college.
Please consider helping me reach my goal of $3,000 Just go to www.the3day.org/goto/ksaikin to get to my fundraising page and make a tax-deductible donation online. If you prefer mailing in a check, go to the website I mentioned earlier to get to my site and then click on the link to print out a donation form. Fill out the form and mail it in with a check made out to "Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure" with my name and participant number, which is found at the top right corner of the donation form, on the memo line of the check, then mail it to the address that’s on the donation form.
Thank you for your donation

| Heart Walk 2009 |
[Apr. 8th, 2009|07:00 pm] |
I am building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke by participating in the American Heart Association's Start! Heart Walk.
As many of you may or may not know, I was born with several severe multiple heart problems and was a cardiac baby. When I was 13 days old, I turned blue in my mom's arms and was rushed to the hospital where I had open heart surgery very soon after. The doctors gave me a 2% chance of surviving the surgery & surviving all together. I once again had heart surgery when I was 5 years old to take of the banding they put on when I had surgery when I was 13 days old. That was almost 27 years ago and I'm proud to say that I am a heart survivor and healthy now. As an adult, I look back on what happened when I was a baby & knew God had other plans for me and helped me survive. I'm here making a difference in the lives of other Heart patients & survivors of heart disease and also for breast cancer survivors like my mom and the lives of many others that I have met in my life.
Sadly I am doing this walk in memory of two friends, Steve Bowman & Ron Jarvis, both of whom suddenly passed away from a heart attack. Ron passed away in 2005 & Steve just passed away in January this year.
Please support this cause by making a donation that will help provide research and education to stop our No. 1 and No. 3 killers. Thank you in advance for your support! Go to http://miheartwalk.kintera.org/ksaikin |

| Please Help Me Reach My Goal |
[Aug. 1st, 2008|07:00 am] |
|
This year I am once again participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day as a Crew member. We're now only 8 weeks away from our event here in Michigan and I still have at least another $300 to raise by September 25th. Please help me reach my goal of $350 this year. I crew because my mom is a survivor and I have a friend that's still battling the monster we call Breast Cancer. I sadly crew in memory of countless women that I have gotten to know through the internet and even the Breast Cancer 3-Day and other walks that I have done in the past that have lost their battle with Breast Cancer. I just need 14 more people to donate just $10 to help me reach my goal. This year's event is in memory of Monica Cooper who in 2007 lost her battle with Breast Cancer. Please consider making a tax deductible online donation by going to http://08.the3day.org/goto/ksaikin or if you would prefer mailing in a donation, print out the donation form that is available on my 3-Day site and send in a check with the form to the address on the form. Please help me because EVERYONE deserves a LIFETIME! |

| Relay For Life |
[Jun. 9th, 2008|09:34 pm] |
|
Well the first ever Relay For Life of Harrison Township was a BIG success and as of the end of the event, we almost DOUBLED our goal by raising $62,500! My team, Angels of Boat Town raised just over $900! We had a great turn out and everyone had a great time. We only had one person that complained because of the noise from the music all night but other than that, we didn't have any other major complaints as far as I know. |

| Heart Walk 2008 |
[May. 18th, 2008|07:54 am] |
|
You all know that I do a lot of cancer walks in honor of my mom and for myself in the FUTURE. Well yesterday for the first time ever, I did the Heart Walk as a Heart SURVIVOR!. Very little of you know that I only had a 2% chance of making it when I was a baby. I was born with multiple severe heart problems, including a narrowing of the aorta. I literally turned blue in my mom's arms when I was 13 days old and I ended up having emergency open-heart surgery when I was 13 days old. I had my second surgery when I was 5 years old and since then I have not had anymore heart issues. I have committed to do the Heart Walk every year from now on. |

Finally got my Crew Assignment for the Michigan Breast Cancer 3-Day in September and I'm once again on the Camp Check-In Team which means I'll be checking in the walkers as they come into camp at the end of the day and also checking them out as they leave camp in the morning and out of Opening Ceremonies also! CREW ROCKS! |

| Various things |
[Apr. 17th, 2008|08:52 am] |
Well we're 45 days away from our first Relay For Life in our township & I'm getting excited and looking forward to the event. On May 17th, I will be doing the Heart Walk as a Heart survivor. Things at church are pretty good, we're gonna be extremely busy next week as our church hosts a organization that helps the homeless in the community. We'll be hosting about 60 men, women & children at our church. We'll feed them breakfast & dinner & give them a sack lunch, do their laundry and give them a place to sleep at night in our gym. Before the people are even allowed into the program let alone into the churches, they are screened to be sure they are not doing drugs or alcohol & things like that.
In other things, I'm doing good and my mom is still recovering from being sick as it takes a while for her to get over being sick. |
